Twice in France for the weekend

In between Belgium and France

It all started on Saturday, February 17th. In a small town Wervik there was a local beer festival and me and some other internationals decided to check it out. Before we headed to the event we had a walk by the Leie river and enjoyed magnificent sunset.

Surprising thing about the river is that it marks a border between Belgium and France. Half of the river belongs to Belgium and other half to France. It's like you are walking in Belgium but on your right side you see France. While we were walking on the bank there was a big bridge in from of us and I was so excited to get on it. I knew that it’s a place where you can be in two countries at one time! This fact blew my mind (LOL) because there is no security, no board control, no one checks your passport. I don’t even know which is the nearest city when you cross the border but this time I felt the easiness of traveling in Europe. I know it’s all because of Schengen Area but I guess I never realized it before. People who live in Wervik goes to France to buy fresh baguettes, champagne or wine and French goes to Belgium for gasoline. There are so many diverse lifestyles around the world and when you discover them it makes you realize differences between cultures.

‘The bridge experience‘ was a memorable thing for me that evening. The beer festival was another exciting event. For me it seemed like a big community gathering. It was special because of the atmosphere - families with even little kids and friends were all together enjoying a good drink. I have never seen such example in Lithuania.

Unfortunately, we had to leave earlier to the last train back home. It required fast running as the train almost left without us. Then we danced until we droped 😜 Yup, that was an adventurous day!

Sunday, February 18th. Internationals decided to take a train to Lille. It’s a city in northern France. We wanted to check the vintage market and walk around the city. To be honest, the market was a bit empty, of course because it was the last day. At least Lille was warm and cozy to spend an afternoon. This city has so many little interesting spots that each of them makes you to take a photo of it.

Do you feel the Frenchiness of this photo? So vintage!
